Zhaga Certification

Independent Lighting Certification Supporting Safety, Interoperability and Global Market Access.

Zhaga Certification

Zhaga is an international consortium of companies from the lighting industry that develops interface specifications for components used in LED luminaires. These specifications define how elements such as light engines, drivers, sensors, and communication modules connect and interact within a luminaire.
Zhaga certification confirms that components and luminaires comply with these interface specifications, enabling interoperable lighting systems and supporting reliable integration of compatible components from different manufacturers.
With extensive experience in lighting certification and interoperability testing, DEKRA provides testing and certification services for Zhaga specifications and supports manufacturers in implementing interoperable and future-ready lighting solutions.

Why Zhaga Matters

Zhaga specifications introduce standardised interfaces that support modular luminaire architectures and simplify the integration of lighting components.
For manufacturers, system integrators and lighting operators, this approach offers several advantages:
  • Improved compatibility between components from different suppliers.
  • Simplified luminaire design and component integration.
  • Easier maintenance and replacement of lighting components.
  • Increased flexibility for smart and connected lighting infrastructures.
By supporting interoperable, upgradeable lighting systems, Zhaga contributes to long-term compatibility and innovation in modern lighting ecosystems.

Components and luminaires covered by Zhaga Certification

Zhaga certification confirms that specific components used in LED luminaires comply with defined interface specifications, enabling reliable integration in compatible lighting systems.
DEKRA supports certification for multiple Zhaga specifications, including key Zhaga Books covering luminaires, LED light engines, LED modules and smart connectivity interfaces, such as Book 18 and Book 20 used in Zhaga-D4i lighting systems.
Zhaga certification may apply to:
  • Luminaires.
  • LED light engines and interchangeable light sources.
  • Sensors and communication nodes.
  • LED drivers and electronic control gear.
  • Standardised LED modules used within LED luminaires.
The Zhaga mark identifies luminaires and LED luminaire components that comply with the relevant specifications, helping manufacturers and integrators recognise compatible products.

Zhaga-D4i and Connected Lighting

Zhaga-D4i combines Zhaga specifications that define luminaire interfaces with D4i communication standards, enabling interoperable, connected lighting systems.
This approach enables:
  • Integration of sensors and communication nodes.
  • Plug-and-play IoT-ready luminaires.
  • Standardized interfaces for smart lighting infrastructures.
  • Flexible system upgrades and maintenance.
DEKRA provides coordinated testing and certification for Zhaga specifications, Zhaga-D4i systems and related communication standards, including D4i and DALI-based lighting technologies.
DEKRA has supported Zhaga certification since the early development of the programme and provides certification services for multiple Zhaga interface specifications.
Zhaga and Sustainable LED Lighting
Zhaga-based luminaire architectures support component replaceability and system upgrades, extending product lifetime and reducing material waste. This modular approach aligns with the growing sustainability requirements and circular economy objectives in the lighting industry. By enabling serviceable, upgradeable lighting systems, Zhaga contributes to more resource-efficient lighting infrastructure.
